Isaac Murphy became the first jockey to win the Kentucky Derby three times and compiled one of the most extraordinary records in racing history. In 1885, Murphy won 38% of his races, the highest winning percentage among America’s leading jockeys that season. By Murphy’s own career accounting, he won 628 of 1,412 mounts — an astonishing 44% career win rate.

Saratoga helped introduce him to the nation. At just 18 years old, Murphy rode Falsetto to victory in the 1879 Travers Stakes, defeating Belmont Stakes winner Spendthrift and announcing the arrival of one of racing’s all-time greats.
